Koh Do Agar - Contemplation and awareness
Agarwood is also known as aloe wood, oud, jinkoh or kyara. For years this wood remains dormant, buried in silent communion with the earth to generate a mysterious and exquisite scent. In Japanese tradition it is one of the woods used in the Koh Do ceremony, the ancient traditional art of incense appreciation, as evoked by the design of the box.
"About Geishas
The art on the box is inspired by an ukiyo-e print by Chöki (1780-1809), which depicts the geisha Mizue being enchanted by the aroma coming from the incense burner held in the hand of the servant Moto. In Japan, the most prestigious geishas not only had to have impeccable appearance and manners, but also had to be skilled in the Cha-do tea ceremony, Ka-do flower art, the Koh-do incense ceremony, poetry Haikai and Waka, Sho-, Go and Sugoroku calligraphy. This is because they were frequently present at social and commercial gatherings and sometimes had to deal with aristocrats, Meishu (the highest ranking official in Japan) and intellectuals. In fact, they possessed such a high cultural level that not even the children of noble families could reach."
