Palo Santo

The prized palo santo wood comes from Bursera graveolens, a tree that grows primarily along the Pacific coast of South America. Its fragrance is characterized by a penetrating sweetness with accents of citrus.

For centuries, Native American peoples have used palo santo in their sacred rituals. They firmly believe that its aromatic white smoke drives away evil spirits and protects the community. It is highly esteemed for its mystical properties of bringing positive energy, cleansing and scenting environments, and fostering an intense spiritual connection. In the areas from which it originates, raw palo santo wood is also used to create decorative and protective objects.

To obtain high-quality palo santo, it is necessary to follow a specific method of wood harvesting. "The tree reaches maturity between 50 and 70 years. When the tree dies naturally, it must be left undisturbed in its original place for at least 5-8 years so that the essential oils can mature enough to produce quality incense," explains Jonathon Miller Weisberger, ethnobotanist and author of Rainforest Medicine: Preserving Indigenous Science and Biodiversity in the Upper Amazon.
